Hi. I'm not sure if this is a bug or if I'm just not understanding the proper usage of the %%CATEGORY%% tag...

On the Edit Blog page (where you edit your Main Template), the Available Token for the %%CATEGORY%% tag says this:

%%CATEGORY%% - Prints current page Category name.

Well it works great on the category pages, but on the main page & single post pages it simply prints out the tag (%%CATEGORY%%).

Shouldn't the %%CATEGORY%% tag be empty (not print anything) on the main & single post pages?

Thank you for your help! Very Happy

yes, if you put the variable right away it will do like that.

if you type it like:

Code:
{{%%CATEGORY%%}}

it will appear only on category pages displaying the current category.
the {{}} enclosure makes certain variables show up only on the appropriate pages where they have output.

Cool! I didn't know that!

So is there any way to make 2 different tags conditional according to which page you're viewing?

For example...

(1) On the Main Page I want my H1 tag to be %%TITLE%%
(2) On the Single Post Page I want my H1 tag to be blank.
(3) On the Category Pages I want my H1 tag to be %%CATEGORY%%

So could something like this work?
Code:
<h1>{{%%TITLE%%}}{{%%CATEGORY%%}}</h1>

I know this is somewhat complicated, but having custom H1 tags for each individual page is critical for SEO. H1 is (along with your <title>) is one of the most important things on your page as far as the SEs are concerned. So ideally, you'll never have two pages with the exact same H1 and/or <title>.

BTW Atanasis... the more I use your scripts, the more I'm beginning to love them. I haven't even started looking at SO yet, but I can hardly wait. Thanks!

i'm not sure if that will work. try and see it on a test blog.

BO blogs by default have really great SEO and they do pretty well so far. Sure there is what more to be wanted and will be implemented with the time.

Thank you Kaktus.

I have tested this as you've suggested, and it doesn't work.

I hope a fix for this will be on the top of your BO feature request list, because I know this structure is causing a lot of people to miss out on a lot of very targeted Google/Yahoo hits.

Kaktus, I'm sure you already know this, but I'll state it anyway in case someone doesn't know... If a category page has the same TITLE and H1 tags as the main page, it's going to kill the SE relevance of ALL those pages. And you will lose a ton of very targeted hits because of it.

For example... Let's say you're building a blog about swingers and your main page is:

UNITED STATES SWINGERS

Then you have categories like:

CALIFORNIA SWINGERS
FLORIDA SWINGERS
NEW YORK SWINGERS
TEXAS SWINGERS

etc...

Well that's all great, but as BO is set up right now, the TITLE and H1 tags for ALL of those pages are going to be the same. So it kills the individual relevance of all those category pages and your category pages will never rank high in the SERPs. So if someone searches for "California Swingers", your California category page will probably be buried on page 25 or 30 of the SERPs.

To Google, all those pages with the same TITLE & H1 tags look suspiciously similar, and Google will probably treat them as blackhat doorway pages. And bury them or de-list them completely... I learned this the HARD way a year or two ago with my WordPress blog.

Actually, the issue extends beyond TITLE & H1... it also includes meta data, H2, H3, etc... but since TITLE and H1 are (by far) the most important aspects of the template structure, I'm just focusing on that.

Kaktus, I hope you can see that I'm not trying to criticize you or BO (because I know it truly is a great script). I just see a place where it can be improved, and I thought I'd take the opportunity to educate someone who might not already know this nit-picky SEO stuff. Smile

hey there,

thanks for the detailed explanation. I highly appreciate your help and i take any kind of advice for consideration. I am not the bext expert into SEO, so there is always what to learn Smile

Especially for the categories, they just appear in BO, so there are several improvements they need. This one will be one of them Smile
