Seem to have killed my server hosting the BO script while trying to manually add a new post to multiple blogs (my bad - thought I was in a small category with 10-20 blogs, so used the Add To: this blog + 100% & clicked the ADD button... then realized it was a big category with 100+ blogs.)

Server went down (which killed ALL of my blogs since they all share the DB on the host) and had to reboot the server to resolve. NO JOY... After the reboot, blog URLs came back up, but then BO host server went down again (best guess - still trying to complete the posting, but times out?).

Which script executes manual posts? Can it be set to execute with a lower priority(NICE?) Need help/suggestion(s) ASAP

Rhino

Note: I've moved all of the RSS feeds from BO to BA, but still need to use the multi-blog manual post feature in BO. Obviously won't post to 100% of the blogs in any category again, but wondering how best to fix this issue.

Looks like the 2nd server reboot seems to have fixed the immediate problem, and the post displays on all of the blogs in that category. Looks like I'll have to make posting with BA's custom feeds a higher priority...

hm, rebooting the server should fix the things. When you add a new post, script just goes and inserts it in mysql for each of the blogs and then regenerate the blogs.

When you have lots of blogs/feeds/posts already and when you insert a new post to over 100 blogs at once yes it is normal to take some more time and since browsers for example wait 20-30 seconds for script and then timeout.

Check what is exactly happening on the server after the reboot. What is causing the load and any other details..

Passed this over to my Sys Admin, should have a better idea after he gets back with me. Thanks!

My SysAdmin didn't have much to say other than problem seemed to be related to the MySQL execution loading up the processor resources. Box seems to be fine now (7 hrs later) after the 2nd reboot.

Big DB is probably the primary cause (1000+ blogs & 285k posts). That category had 100+ blogs, and half of them show 300-500 or more posts per blog. Is there any way to set a limit on the number of posts in each blog, or purge posts from the DB older than a certain date?

i see, yes probably is the mysql, but just wondered why it would go down again after a reboot when script doesn't try to retry the work that caused the first load..

in the next version of BO i will be just adding prune functions so it will free up database from some older posts. If you need prunning from now i can give you 1-2 mysql queries which you will need to run manually from time to time and then regenerate blogs.

and generally when you are doing that kind of heavy blogging and already having that big database you need to get more careful when doing such mass actions and try to do it on few steps.

Humm, 2nd reboot may not have been directly related to the first... (but it fixed my problem) so life is good.

Probably would be a good idea to get the queries to prune the DB as I'd guess the DB size (and it supporting BO/BA/GS/LO/SO) is a lot of my problem. I'm not really comfortable with command line tasks (but I can pass it to my SysAdmin so I don't break something else).

Rhino

What are your thought about splitting up the DB into individual DBs - one DB for each of the scripts (simple task or major PITA)?

ok, will send you the prune queries by tomorrow..

yes, splitting the databases for each script could help in your case. Make a database for each script, copy from the main database the tables of each script to the new database and then edit the info.inc.php file of each script to match the new database info. and once you have everything working delete the unnecessary tables from the main database.
