i have deleted all old posts from a blog.
unfortunately BO brings no 404 error if i visit an removed blog post. it just shows the blog homepage.
search engines have no change now to remove that pages from there index.

is that normal for BO or is something wrong on my end?

yes, it redirects to the main page after a 404 notice.. SEs will deindex your deleted posts after time, it doesn't happen instantly you know..

i tried to check for a redirection or a 404 status. i found only a 200 status and no redirection.
the server header should normally return the 404 stats and a redirection.

how do you check that status?

it is just like in Wordpress, when you delete a post and visit its url after that you either get redirected to the main page or the whole blog loads (200 status) and just a "content not found" is printed where the posts should be..

yes, wordpress have a working 404 management.
if you visit a deleted WP post, you get to a real 404 page "content not found" WITH a real 404 status.
if you have a WP blog with the "content not found" page and a 200 status on that page, then your WP is miss-configured.

but BO does not redirect and you get a page WITHOUT a 404 stats. the deleted BO pages just display the homepage with a 200 status. that means, that google can not remove that pages from the index. that mean heavy DC.

maybe i am wrong, but this is what i see.

i sent you 2 examples yesterday.
there are hundred of tools where you can check the httpd header.
like http://gsitecrawler.com/tools/Server-Status.aspx

Hi there,
no, i am not ignoring anything! I have explained You that there is 404 status followed by a 301 redirect to the blog main page.

I have no problems to modify the code for You for 5 minutes and hardcode just a 404 response to make You happy. Then you handle the 404 yourself as you wish through htaccess like on any regular website..

Just let me know and I will do that for you. Just take in mind you will need to update the bopost.php linking file of all your blogs to make this new change working.

Let me know..

Thanks!

i dont need something modified if its working.
the problem is only that i found no way to check what you say. normally you can check 404 codes and redirects with a header test.
also the google webmaster tools show me a positive result. and all the removed posts are still indexed. sure, i dont know how long it take to get de-indexed....

i thought you can show me how i can verify the 404, that why i wrote "maybe i am wrong"...

i just want to be sure, that my site not produce duplicate content.

well, i don't know an online tool to do a header test the way it needs to be done, because as i explained there are couple of headers sent on each redirect..

And i don't know how much time it will take G to deindex..

Anyways, if you like i can do the mod for you and you will just update the bopost.php file of each your blog. It is not much work if you don't have many blogs..
