I have some posts I need to delete but I am concerned that this will hurt my SEO. In Wordpress there is a plugin called Redirection that makes it easy to redirect deleted URLs to another URL so SEO is not effected.

I know BO does not use plugins like that so I wanted to ask for suggestions on how to best handle this. Is setting up a redirect in htaccess the method to use? I'd rather not change my htaccess if possible because I am concerned I might cause other problems.

You can go ahead and delete the posts without any concerns regarding SEO, since Google pretty good knows content is being deleted as it is being published.. It is normal process, so why should it penalize you?

I was under the impression that when Google indexes a site and later cannot find a blog post that was deleted, this could hurt your SEO ranking. I think that's why Wordpress has the "Redirection" plugin, so you can set up dead links to point somewhere else still active on your blog. I guess I'll have to look into this a little more.

no, that doesn't hurt ofcourse because it is natural process for this to get deleted when they aren't needed anymore.. Probably WP have special redirection plugin because when you visit nonexisting post in a WP blog you just get a blank themed screen with words like "sorry, nothing found", while BO redirects to the main blog page by default so people still see your blog content and thats no lost traffic..
